Cusco, known as the Archaeological Capital of the Americas, was once the capital of the Inca Empire and today stands as one of Peru´s and the world´s most important travel destinations. Located in southeastern Peru, at more than 3,300 meters (10,800 feet) above sea level, it serves as the gateway to one of the Seven Wonders of the World: Machu Picchu.
Recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site, Cusco welcomes you with its unique gastronomy, deep-rooted traditions, and customs that invite you to stay and discover the charm of this extraordinary city.
Situated in the heart of the Andes, Cusco carries a historical legacy closely tied to the Inca civilization. According to tradition, its origins date back to the 13th century, when the first Inca, Manco Cápac, founded the city. Over time, it became the central hub of the Inca Empire and the Tahuantinsuyo, which stretched across much of South America, playing a crucial role in the politics, religion, and culture of the Andean world.
Today, traces of that past can still be seen in its architecture and urban planning—cobblestone streets, stone walls, and agricultural terraces. However, this golden age was interrupted in the 16th century with the arrival of the Spanish.
During the colonial period, Cusco underwent major transformations. Many Inca temples and palaces were destroyed and replaced by European-style churches and buildings. Yet, significant remnants of its past remain, such as the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuamán and the Temple of the Sun, known as Korikancha, both of which continue to stand as silent symbols of Cusco´s greatness.
Cusco offers a wide range of tourist attractions. Among the most visited are Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuamán, Ollantaytambo, and Qorikancha—Inca structures that continue to amaze travelers with their architectural precision and massive stone blocks.
